About the Hong Kong market Hong Kong SAR was established in July 1st, 1997 and is a special administrative region of China. Hong Kong is ideally located to act as a gateway to Chinese mainland, making it well positioned to take advantage of the emergence of the Chinese market. The local pharmaceutical market is also very strong and developed. Hong Kong is considered to have one of the highest per capita drug spending in the Asian region. Between the years 2011 to 2015, the pharmaceutical sales per capita averaged USD$200 per capita and this figure is expected to increase in the coming years due to an aging population. For the prescription drug market, in 2015 the figure was a total of USD$1.3 billion and forecasted to increase to USD$1.74 billion by 2019 with generic drugs accounting for 25% of the sale.
